S&S overcomes umpire, advances to Regional Final

SAGINAW, TX -- It's a shame when an umpire acts like he is more important than the game. It's even moreso when it's during a high school softball game.

The S&S softball team fell victim to one of those umpires Saturday afternoon during Game 2 of their Regional Semi-final. The homeplate umpire ejected S&S pitcher Angela White and also her battery mate, catcher Nikki Jones for apparently complaining about his strike zone.

Head Coach Jason Inman seemed baffled by the ejections, but remained calm throughout the process. The same could not be said, however, for one of the S&S fans in attendence. The umpire also ejected that fan for shouting through the fence at the umpire.

The Lady Rams ended up losing Game 2, 1-0, forcing a decisive Game 3.

After the umpires rotated positions, things went much more smooth for Game 3. In what could be called, poetic justice, the 2 players ejected from Game 2, White and Jones, both drove in a run for S&S in the final game. Jones sent a sacrafice fly to left that scored Haley Colwell to make it 1-0. Then White sent a sinking liner to center scoring Kayli Croney giving S&S a 2-0 advantage. The Lady Rams would go on to win 2-1.

They will now take on Aubrey in the 2A Region II Championship next weekend.

Are you serious?? These girls purposely take out the ump and you are treating them like superstars? What is wrong with you? It is not OK what they did. I was at the game, routing for S & S, and saw it. Unbelievable. They will not beat Aubrey.

The ump obviously intended to "throw" the game by tossing those 2 girls from the minute he stepped on the field. He had them so rattled EVEN the catcher has bruises from missing the pitches they were desperatley trying to place in his strike zone which was an impossible task. Thanks to the talent of the ENTIRE team he didn't succeed in taking away the win these girls deserved.

Catchers just do not "dive" out of the way of a pitch, whoever wrote this comment has obviously never seen a softball game in their life, or is probably an umpire!!!! Also the only run that was scored in the 2nd game should have been an out at second base because another one of thier Umps called her safe at 2nd base when the catcher CLEARLY threw her out!! (anyone that was there would agree!!!) In the 3rd game the S&S umps actually made the game fair, and S&S won the game like they were supposed to!!!

This is what is wrong with sports, when adults defend indefinsive unsportsmanlike actions by blaming the umpire. The coach from S&S has to bear some of the responsibility for not punishing the players involved in an glaring obvious assault on an umpire. The catcher set up on the inside corner and when the pitch was released moved to the outside, made no attempt to even act like she was going to stop the pitch. Dangerous actions by kids that should be playing a game. They do not deserve to play anymore this season. If it is ignore you have condoned it.
