The Whitewright Tigers had a magical run to their first state tournament since 1977, but that all ended when the Tigers played Kountze in the state semifinals.
Cameron Powell scored 28 points as Kountze beat Whitewright 92-77 in the Frank Erwin Center. Matt Smith led the way for Whitewright with 21 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 54% that Kountze shot from the field in route to a berth to the state championship game.
Kountze went to the free throw line 33 times, to Whitewright's 12. That proved to be the difference in a 15 point Kountze win. Kountze shot 60 percent from the charity stripe, Whitewright, 66 percent.
The Tigers finish the season with their deepest playoff run in 30 years, finishing with a 30-5 record.
The good news for Whitewright is that three of the five starters will return next year. That includes star players Matt Smith and Jordan Williams.
Kountze will play Shallowater in Saturday's state title game.
