DALLAS - D.J. Jones scored five touchdowns as the Denison Yellow Jackets defeated Sulphur Springs, 49-35, in the Texas 4A Division II Semifinals at SMU's Ford Field on Saturday.
Jones opened the Jackets' scoring with a 70-yard burst on the Jackets' first possession of the game, then added two more rushing and two receiving touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets (13-1), who avenged playoff losses to Sulphur Springs (10-4) in each of the last two seasons.
The Yellow Jackets trailed twice in the first half before taking the lead 21-20 on Jordan Taylor's first touchdown midway through the second quarter, and then Taylor, who finished the game with 223 rushing yards, added another rushing score to gave the Jackets a 28-20 halftime lead. After the Wildcats scored early in the third quarter to get within a point at 28-27, Jones scored three consecutive touchdowns to turn a close game into a rout.
Denison has won 12 games in a row and advances to the Texas Class 4A Division II Semifinals next Saturday, December 12th. The Yellow Jackets will take on the Aledo Bearcats (13-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Collins Complex in Denton, with a trip to the state championship game on the line.
