Cody Smith pitched 5 2/3 strong innings
and had a run-scoring hit Thursday to lead Johnson City past Blue
Ridge, 7-2, for the Class 1A baseball championship, the school's
first state title in more than 60 years.
Smith allowed seven hits and one earned run, while Laramie
Blackwell picked up the save and scored twice after getting the win
in the semifinals. Garrett Deleon had two hits and a RBI for
Johnson City (32-6).
The state title was the first for Johnson City since winning the
Class B basketball crown in 1947.
Bradley White took the loss for Blue Ridge (29-6-1) after
allowing four hits and three runs in four innings, but he hit a
sixth-inning home run.
