The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Trinity University on Friday, handing the Tigers their first conference loss of the season in the process and improving to 10-22 overall and 5-5 in SCAC play. The ‘Roos topped the Tigers 2-1 in game one before falling 7-5 in game two.
In game one, Austin College took advantage of a Trinity error to plate a pair of runs in the third inning with Jessica Baker doubling home Charlotte Trudell and Briana Slawson scoring on a sacrifice fly by Suzanne Beltran to make it a 2-0 game. The Tigers countered with a run in the fifth, and in the top of the seventh with the ‘Roos still clinging to a 2-1 lead, Trinity loaded the bases with one out but Amber Pemberton worked her way out of the jam to earn the complete game victory.
Baker and Beltran each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Pemberton went the distance, surrendering one run, which was unearned, on eight hits.
Trinity took a 1-0 lead in game two before a solo homer from Beltran knotted things up after two innings, and after two runs came home for the Tigers in the top of the third the ‘Roos answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, including an RBI double by Heather Farquhar and a two run single by Mallory Rossman to make it 5-3 in favor of Austin College.
However, Trinity would answer back in the fourth with a three run homer by Caitlynn Dykes, her second homer of the game, to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. Trinity would add one more run in the sixth to help ice the 7-5 win.
Beltran went 1-for-2 with a homer and two runs scored and Rossman went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the ‘Roos. Dykes went 3-for-4 with two homers and 5 RBI to pace the Tigers.
The ‘Roos and Tigers will square off again tomorrow for another doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
