The Fox Foxes are hoping the drop to Class C will improve their chances of getting a state title. Head coach Brent Phelps is coming off a season where he went 10-2 and reached the quarterfinals.
"Yeah, we got beat out in the quarter-finals by a team that actually played the state champion the next week and played them tougher than any other team did all year an we played them tough too, we just got caught up in quick sand and couldn't get out," said coach Brent Phelps.
The Foxes come into the season ranked third in the state as they return six starters including Camerick Buycks, who is still bitter after coming up short last season.
"It hurt pretty bad, to know that everybody wanted that gold ball, but we'll make it there this year, hopefully," said Buycks.
But before the red and white can begin to think about trophies and parades, they will need to find a replacement for Taylor Townsend, who has been the do it all quarterback for the Foxes the past few seasons.
"It's not about one person at all, like I said everybody's been working their butts off, just busting it everyday. During the winter, during the spring, and during the summer, we've had guys up here everyday," said wide reciever Nathan Loyd.
No doubt the Foxes should be a force in 8-man football, but as head coach Phelps says, you still have to play the game, and his guys are ready to do just that.
"With this group of kids we have, they gel real well, work real well together and their hungry for it, their excited about it, they've been talking all summer and we've got high expectations for them," said Phelps.
