The Pottsboro Cardinals are coming off a great year where they went 11-and-2 overall and 5-0 in district. The Cardinals won their third straight district crown and went all the way to the regional semifinals.
"Nobody expected us to win a game," said senior Hunter Mllenix. "Came out, three rounds deep in the playoffs. Won a district championship, just had a really good time showing everybody what are talent truly was."
"We were successful last year, when a lot of people thought we shouldn't be. I think we can do it again this year," said senior Chris Delacruz.
The Cardinals return 15 starters, but will need to find a replacement for Kory Waller, last season's district MVP. Head coach Matt Poe will be leaning on his leaders Mullenix on offense and Delacruz on defense.
"A lot of guys coming back from last years team, and we've got quite a few big spots to fill, but otherwise we feel pretty good of what we have coming," said coach Poe.
"We have some players that can come and fill them up, but they will have to work hard," said Mullenix. "I mean, we all need to work hard, but we can do it, definitely."
Experience will help as coach Poe enters his 9th season at Pottsboro. New faces emerge in the 5-3A district like Whitesboro, Pilot Point and Callisburg, but Pottsboro is still picked to finis above them all.
"District is going to be tough, I mean week in week out, your going to play some really talented people, that have great coaching staffs, it's going to be really tough, any Friday night, I mean anybody can win, I think it's going to be that close," said coach Poe.
"It's just our expectation is to win, we don't expect to lose, expect to come out here and not have an easy day, come out here and work hard and expect to win," said Mullenix.
