Hamilton wants to play in All-Star game

PHOENIX (AP) - Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, recovering from abdominal surgery, will play in the All-Star Game if elected.

Hamilton is ahead of schedule in his recovery and is expected to return to the lineup about a week before the game on July 14 in St. Louis.

Hamilton was third in voting among AL outfielders, behind Boston's Jason Bay and Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki, in the most recent balloting update. Hamilton is hitting .240 with six homers and 24 RBIs.

In his first All-Star appearance, Hamilton stole the show in last year's Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium, hitting a record 28 homers, including 13 in a row. Hamilton said he'd skip the derby this year because he doesn't want to risk injury - a decision endorsed by Texas manager Ron Washington.
