ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Rookie Derek Holland threw a three-hitter against the majors' highest-scoring offense for his first career shutout, and the Texas Rangers gained ground on the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels with a 7-0 victory Sunday.
The 22-year-old Holland (5-7) didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning of his 12th career start as Texas took two of three from the Angels in their weekend series, cutting Los Angeles' lead in the AL West to 3½ games. The Rangers have won nine of 12 against the two-time defending division champions.
Marlon Byrd homered and drove in three runs, and Taylor Teagarden hit a late two-run homer for the Rangers, who scored their first two runs when Bobby Abreu dropped a two-out fly to right field in the fourth.
