Dirk joins free agent frenzy

Add Dirk Nowitzki to the bumper crop of talented free agents.
A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press
that Nowitzki has notified the Dallas Mavericks he is opting out of
the final year and $21.5 million on his existing contract. The
person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't
planning to announce Nowitzki's decision.
Mavericks president Donnie Nelson already has booked a flight
that will have him overseas at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday - or, 6:01
a.m. in Germany. He wants to be there when the free agency signing
window opens to show how sincere the team is about keeping its
all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

I believe Dirk is a great player. The question must be is whether or not it is worth it to give him a 6 yr contract at 25 million or so per year, guaranteed. The Mavs could get to the point where they are true contenders for a championship. However, in three years Dirk won't be the player he is now, and consequently even two years of modest upgrading at other positions won't make any differnce. If the Mavs really want a Championship, and they re-sign Dirk they need to also make a big free agent acquisition NOW! Without making that big move, in a few years Dirk will just end up being an overpaid star in decline on 40 win team.

Dirk flew back in so Nelson doesn't have to go anywhere, and no one said Dirk was leaving. It seems he is trying to get a better contract.

Showboating? Really? Get a ticket and watch the game. Hard to win with the supporting cast. Guess now Dampier can show his stuff, huh?
