Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his right hip, ending his chances of pitching this season for Texas.

Lewis says he has been dealing with hip pain during his comeback from surgery last year to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow.

The repaired elbow has felt good, but Lewis said Tuesday the hip problem has progressed to affecting his mechanics.

Lewis, the team's most successful postseason pitcher, had been pitching in rehabilitation games. He had been expected to possibly be in the Rangers rotation in the next couple of weeks.

After his elbow surgery last year, the Rangers gave him a $2 million, one-year deal for 2013. General manager Jon Daniels says the team would "absolutely" like to have him back.
