DURANT, Okla. -- Officials say a Durant monument is in danger of being torn down. It sits on the east side of 9th Street, south of the city.

ODOT discovered the monument while planning the Highway 70 bypass project.

They say the engraving is just one of several monuments placed in eastern Oklahoma by Mrs. Ora O'Reilly in the 1940's.

Officials say they hope someone will relocate the monument in the next few months before it's destroyed.

I wonder if they can move Calera while there at it? What an eye sore.

The monument just needs to be moved to a new location and not cause the same kind of problems that Denison had. It could go with the rest of the stuff out by Highway 75.

For me to care, I need to know what kind of monument it is... Did a famous stagecoach ride pass there? Did someone important live there? What? Please complete the story KXII.

Surely this could easily be moved to a city park rather than being destroyed. Heck, I would be HONORED to take it if they don't figure out how to save it.

Thank goodness the monument is located in Durant and not Denison because Dension would just demolish it, like they did the beautiful historical old high school.

ODOT should not have the authority to destroy a historical monument. Move the highway around it. The person involved apparently got the permission to plant the monument at it's location, so ODOT should respect that.
