SOUTHMAYD, Tex. --Southmayd residents got some answers tonight after being concerned about layoffs at city hall. Officials say it all comes down to a tight budget. The council met for hours Wednesday night in their regularly scheduled meeting.
The main topic: saving money. They say the city does not bring in much revenue, and last fiscal year they had more expenses than they anticipated. The city laid off one police officer put the city secretary on leave. Officials say they plan to raise taxes to inject more money into the budget.
"We really need to raise additional revenues in the city and that’ll make it easier on our budget when come budget time make it easier for us to do additional things for the city," said Daniel Pepe, mayor of Southmayd.
The council also discussed selling some police and fire units to create more revenue. They did not take action tonight.
