DENISON, Tex. -- Kwikset officials have confirmed their plans to layoff 36 total employees. Some employees say a meeting was held Tuesday morning informing them of the layoffs.

Rumors of more than 30 layoffs have been floating around the company. Employees tell us management informed them more than 20 temporary employees will be let go and 15 full-time employees would be asked to resign voluntarily.

In a statement from Kwikset, officials there say they are moving forward with the layoffs because of a softening in the US housing market. Officials say they are releasing 14 full time employees and 22 temporary employees. They say full time employees will be given the option of being voluntarily laid off first.

Kwikset manufactures door locks, door handles, and other hardware. They expect the layoffs to be complete by the end of next week. All the laid off employees are eligible for severance packages.

The good news is the unemployment rate is at an all-time low, hovering around 5 percent. Workforce experts say it should not be too difficult for these employees to find another job.

We have repeatedly asked Kwikset managers to give an on-camera statement, but they have denied our requests.

From Tuesday...

DENISON, Tex. -- Officials with Kwikset aren't talking about their cost-cutting plans. Despite the lack of news from company representatives, some workers tell us they may be without a job in a few days.

Employees at Kwikset in Denison say management told them in a meeting Tuesday morning that around 20 temporary employees would be let go, and asked if any full-time employees would take a voluntary layoff in order to cut costs.

We tried to contact management multiple times today. They will not confirm how many of their employees are being let go or a reason for the layoffs.

Officials say they plan to release all the information on cut backs on Wednesday.

Executive directors at Workforce Texoma say Grayson County’s unemployment rate is 5.4%, which is good for those out there looking for a job.
