DURANT, Okla. -- Emergency management officials in Durant are improving communication with each another thanks to the help of a grant.

Durant emergency management officials say one of the biggest problems they face during an emergency is how to properly communicate with one another. Now, thanks to a grant, that problem should be solved within the next couple of weeks.

Pagers are just one of many items to be purchased by the emergency management office to improve communication in case if a disaster, all thanks to a $63,000 grant designed to improve emergency management departments across the state.

Officials say in addition to the pagers, they plan on purchasing a full computer system linking up 250 pagers at once. They are also buying 30 Kenwood mobile transceivers and 10 portable ones, in case cell phone traffics are not operational during a disaster.

The money will also be used to set up training seminars for the staff. Officials say the number one problem during an emergency situation is getting all units involved on the same page, and thanks to this money they hope to do just that in Durant and Bryan County.

"What we're trying to do is find ways to be interoperable where we can talk to each other and communicate with each other than necessary or everyday means," Durant emergency management director James Dalton said.

Dalton says in case of an emergency, the pagers will also be handed out to some of the city officials including the city manager and the police chief because he says they are the ones that know the city best.
