TISHOMINGO, Okla. -- Murray State College and Tishomingo residents spent the afternoon remembering former college president, Dr. William Pennington. Pennington died on Saturday in a head-on collision.

Afternoon classes at the Murray State campus and Ardmore Higher Education Center were cancelled, which allowed students and staff to attend Wednesday’s service.

Several hundred did just that, as they turned out for Dr. Bill Pennington’s memorial.

Oklahoma Representative Paul Roan and State Senator Jay Paul Gumm were among the speakers at the memorial. After speaking with several students and faculty, they say mourning their loss has brought them closer together.

Interim president Dr. Noble Jobe says Pennington has left a lasting imprint on the community.

"We’re very united, but somber. We all see the good Dr. Pennington did on the campus. Obviously from the turnout, his legacy will live for a long time on this campus. We were very blessed to have him here."

School officials say Jobe will serve as interim president.

Dr. Pennington's funeral will be held in Duncan, Oklahoma. Arrangements are still pending.
