Cheap shots

GRAYSON CO., TX -- Every parent has received the long list of vaccinations recommended by a doctor. A federal plan, active in both Texas and Oklahoma, provides ways for children to receive shots at a lower price.

Fatima Santos is taking steps to keep her daughter Bailey well, especially as flu season begins.

"He [Bailey’s father Jose] has been a little sick so we'd rather get the flu shot before everyone gets sick," Santos said.

The flu vaccine arrived in Grayson County from the state health department Thursday, so families are taking advantage of its availability. It's just one of many shots children can receive at the health department.

"We're a really good deal,” said Nancy Grella, a nurse with the health department. “It's $10 per child per visit whether if we give one shot or if we give 8 shots."

The health department is just one of many participants across Texas and Oklahoma in the vaccines for children program. The program is intended to save families money, especially those without health insurance or have poor coverage.

"Nobody wants to see your child ill, so whether it's the flu shot or any other shot your child may need," Grella said.

Parents can also request the state-provided vaccines when they visit their pediatrician, and pay $8 a shot. This could lead to hundreds of dollars worth of savings for the same quality product.

The Grayson County health department holds an immunization clinic every Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00 pm until 5:30 pm.

The Carter Co. Health Department is hosting a drive-through flu clinic November 2 from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm or until they run out of the vaccine.
