SHERMAN, Tex. -- If you are headed out for the holiday, the Texas Department of Public Safety has a warning for you. They are not just looking for drunk drivers this thanksgiving. Mystic Matthews spoke to troopers who say they will be out in full force this holiday week.

State troopers will be out this week covering the roads, especially because so many will be traveling, but they are looking for more than people drinking or speeding.

Use your blinker, pay attention to the road and buckle up. These are all warnings state troopers are giving to drivers.

“We want people to slow down, use turn signals and most of all, if you drink, make sure you get a driver,” Texas State Trooper Rebecca Uresti says.

Troopers say there will be a lot of people out on the road, so this time more than ever, pay attention and be courteous to others sharing the highway.

So far, some drivers say the traffic hasn't been bad, but it’s early.

“It’s a little congested going through Fort Worth, just three lanes going down to two, but other than that, it hasn't been bad." holiday traveler Jerry Pyle says.

Gas prices may be up, but the roads prove that isn't stopping everybody. AAA’s surveys indicate a record 38.7 million U.S. residents will travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving.

“You know, excited about it. Not thrilled about the price of gas but other than that, this is the time of year people travel, so we're traveling." Pyle says.

But be careful, Texas troopers wrote almost 17,000 speeding tickets last year.

“Absolutely, every available trooper working, we don't get time off. We are definitely out working. More cars, more tickets," she says

If you are still planning on leaving for Thanksgiving, give yourself plenty of time so you don't have to hurry, and as Trooper Uresti says- be nice on the road!

This was a lot of hype and malarkey. We drove to Dallas and back on Thanksgiving day, and the only trooper we saw was in Sherman, pulling into the DPS office. People were driving like loons. The troopers were probably at home having turkey like the rest of us.

People are definitely different when they get behind the wheel. Road rage is NOT cool...you are just another a-hole in the world if you can't drive anywhere without getting pissed off, I just don't get it. We had two tail-gaters and one cut-off tonight while driving ALL THE WAY from Sherman to Denison on Hwy 75. Yep, we were going the speed limit and that is what makes THEM MAD; whoever you are! No one respects the speed limit or the law...they know there are not enough police to police them. And they are the ones that cry about how we Americans live in a "police state". I just wish you would stop trying to kill your own people or yourselves while driving like madmen to get to the figgin WalMart or the beer store!
