Around 2,600 Oklahoma National Guard troops are back at home for the Christmas holiday. About 34 donated buses traveled from fort bliss in El Paso up to the Sooner State to bring home the men and women of the 45th Infantry Brigade, who have been training in Texas since late October.
Last month, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry announced the goal that would raise $600,000 to rent buses and buy gas and food for the trip.
"It’s awesome, just seeing his face come through the door, and smile. He's home for 10 days,” one soldier’s father, Don Johnson, said.
The soldiers are scheduled to report back to training on January 2.
