SHERMAN, Tex. -- One local doctor is helping Austin College students reach their goals. Dr. Ray Thomas is sponsoring what is known as the Thomas Challenge Scholarship Program. Stephanie Brletic explains.
Dr. Thomas and his wife are both proud Austin College alumni, so when the vice president for institutional advancement approached them about the Scholarship Challenge, they jumped at the chance.
The Thomas Challenge is a challenge to local people and businesses to put up the money for a four-year scholarship at Austin College. As an incentive, Dr. Thomas will pay $2,000 of the pledge amount during the first year. Plus, the school will double the donation amount over all four years.
Austin College representatives say getting one of these scholarships will likely make the difference between a student being able to attend the college or not.
"These are not a bunch of rich kids. The vast majority of students who get these scholarships are not only meritorious, but are in financial need, and it will help them that way,” Jim Lewis at Austin College says.
Dr. Thomas and Mr. Lewis both hope the challenge will lead to opportunity for the students as well as lasting relationships between the donor and recipient.
Scholarship money will be given out at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.
