Southmayd considering eliminating police force

SOUTHMAYD, Tex. -- Police officers in Southmayd might soon be looking for new jobs. The city's budget troubles are no secret, and now one possible solution has residents concerned for their safety. Stephanie Brletic has more.

One of the proposed solutions on the table is the dismissal of the entire police force, a proposal that's meeting with a lot of resistance from residents.

Mayor Daniel Pepe says the city's budget woes are no secret and says the city can't keep losing money. He says council members are looking at any and every possible solution to help the city stay in the black, one of which is eliminating the police department.

"We don't know what's going to happen," Pepe says.

Residents are hoping that staying on budget doesn't cost them their safety by losing police presence in the city. Police officers say they worry more about community safety than they worry about keeping their jobs.

If the police department is eliminated, the Grayson County Sheriff's Office will serve as the area's law enforcement.

Mayor Pepe says nothing is definite, and right now there are no plans to take action on dismantling the department. Any action to eliminate the department would take place at a city council public session.

The next council meeting is scheduled for January 8. Agendas for the meeting will be posted in the local newspaper, at the post office, and in city hall.

Why doesn't the city instead of eliminating the police department, turn it into a volunteer police department? The city could then apply for government funds to be used for maintaining the police department. The only benefit the all volunteer officers would receive is medical benefits. But, that alone maybe enough for some. Plus, if they continued on in law enforcement or other government occupation that time of service with the volunteer police department would count toward service time when it comes to their retirement. This, is just a thought that I think would be beneficial to all concerned without jeopardizing the safety of the community.

It is the epitome of ignorance to suggest that any of the city's financial problems started with Pepe. He hasn't been here long enough to cause a problem. It is the epitome of gullible to suggest that the police department is so vital to our survival as a city. We made it just fine before the federal grants came our way to fund them in the first place. And by the way, it is a fact that response time is no better now than before we had local police. This is based on my own experiences in which the Southmayd Police did not respond to pages from the 911 operator. In two of those instances County Sheriff cars arrived first and in one instance Southmayd police never showed. In other words, they are not vital to our safety or survival. We didn't have the money to fund a Police dept before we got the federal funds and we don't have the money now that the federal funds have run dry. As for Pepe's supposed rap sheet, come on, a few traffic tickets? Now that is the epitome of grasping at straws.

For the one in Mckinney , question "How long have you been out of this area?" These streets are patroled more than you might think you! Have no idea if you do not live here anymore!

I also noticed the post about the child with a syringe and rig in her pocket at school. I know about this matter personally and also know the Police did nothing about it. This child lived under these conditions for 5 full years (she is now in foster care). Not only did the Police fail to protect her, but the community and school district also failed to act and this child was forced to live under these conditions for 5 years.

I recently moved from Southmayd to McKinny but still have a residence in the City. I think that the Police dept. is worthless, they patrol nothing but the highway, Southmayd is known by most people in North Texas as a speed trap, nothing more.

I lived in Southmayd for many years. I attended council meetings and let me tell you people who have never attended a meeting but listen to the present mayor. You have no right to start handing down judgement about things you know nothing about. You never even cared about city business until Pepe started with his lies. Not one of you bothered to investigate anything Pepe said or did but you can sure run your run your mouth like Pepe. Pepe did not get all the facts before acting, and he does not believe in telling the truth nor does his handpicked council. He interpets the truth to suit his purposes. All he wants is to get his name plastered in the news whether it makes him look good or bad. He does not care about the people of Southmayd. Ask Pepe about his fake apology to the council before he was actually elected to the council. What did do that he had to apologize for? See if you get the truth.

First of all, to all of those out there who claim that Southmayd residents are uneducated let me tell you that I am from Southmayd and I have probably taken care of you or one of your family members when they needed medical attention. Yes, I went to college so I could attend to sick or injured people regardless of the stupid comments they may make. I want everyone to know that the financial problems in the city have been going on for years while the prior mayor was in service. Look into why that mayor had to step down and you'll find out where the money went. As for the Southmayd PD, someone should check into their response time verses the Grayson Cty SO time. I guarantee you that the majority of the time the sheriff's office arrives prior to our own local police. Also I know of 2 former residents who ran a meth lab and that I turned in numerous times, yet they were never arrested even when their child had a syringe inside her coat at school. How's that for protection?

I don't know how southmayd runs but as for most towns with voluteers the expenses are fairly low with help of tax money and grants. How would getting rid of volunteer services help the expenses? Sure you need equipment for these services but most towns have that tax money earmarked for those departments anyway and can't use it for another department. Whatever the case, you need to look for solutions to increase revenue and decrease expenses in other areas to maintain what you have in FD, EMS an PD. As for running down the FD and EMS, I have worked both sides paid and volunteer for many years and you other towns need to get off your high horse and work together instead acting like Jr high kids.
