DENISON, TX -- Remembering a fallen Denison firefighter one year later. Dozens of people showed their support at candle light vigil to reflect on the life of Phillip Townsend killed in the line of duty.

A mix of tears and laughter fills the atmosphere as family and co-workers pause to remember Phillip Townsend. They remembered him at the site where the tragic accident occurred, just one year ago.

"Phillip was a close friend to all the men that were here, we're here tonight to celebrate his life and just remember that he'll never be forgotten," says Lt. Brandon Eeeds, one of Phillip’s former co-workers.

Other firefighters say they can't talk about him without tearing up. Townsend died last year when the Wilbanks Appliance building collapsed on him while fighting a fire.

All that remains of the store is an empty lot, but it became a makeshift memorial with candles lining a wall. Even in the solemn atmosphere of the night, the vigil wasn't about his death, but celebrating his life. Friends say his life was one full of laughter, smiles, and fond memories for everyone here.

"Phillip was a good man, he was a good father, with 3 kids, he was a rookie firefighter with the fire department. But, in the short time he was there, he meant a lot to all the men.”

Even though the memories of Phillip will never leave those who attended, they hope for some closure after an event so tragic for so many.

to fireman location denison....does someone have to be punished to honor phillip???? is that really an honorable thing to do??? you can make positive changes so no one else is hurt w/o hurting others along the way! this was a horrible thing to happen why do more people have to hurt?

I agree with metroplex fireman SS, I know the family and they want justice served more than anything and will being going after the city to keep this from happening again. To I would help, I believe it would either take the city council voting on an audit or else the citizens petitioning for one, and since the first will happen some years after hell freezes over I think the only other way would be the petition if we can even get them to recognize that, I would love for someone like you to take the initiative to get this started unfortunatly if I were to do it I would have to suffer consequences at work. Thanks to all that want to or would be willing to help, and to clarify we are not using this story to cry about things we are trying to HONOR Philllip's death by making sure the city is punished and that NO one else has to be killed.

hey ss. Shut up u must be kin to some of the city leaders or chief of the fire dept. Only someone with the same disrespect they showed phillip would defend this crooked city. Honor, truth and integrity are 3 words these city leaders need to learn.

You people should be ashamed of yourself and KXII should be ashamed of itself for allowing useless babble to continue about such a senitive story. If that's the way you feel then fine. However this story was about remembering a fallen firefighter that lost his life to a tragic event. Your doing no justice for Mr. Townsend's family. You think they want to come here and read this crap. KXII take it off!!

I have a relative in the fire department and would be more than happy to demand an external audit to expose the truths if it helps protect save his life. But how does an ordinary citizen of Denison help to do that??

There was negligence all over this case and the Chief should be fired and disbarred and the city should be taken to court the chief sounds incompedent and morally unavailable. This was a needless act of stupidity on the Chief's part.Read the report. So many bad decisions by the Chief, why is he still on the job endangering more people and lives. We havent had any deaths in Sherman, thank God and Denison has two.Whats up with that?
