ARDMORE, Okla. -- Hundreds gathered in Ardmore on Wednesday to say farewell to Carter County Sheriff Harvey Burkhart. Friends, family and law enforcement officials were at the Ardmore Convention Center for an emotional, heartfelt ceremony.

His friends said he was dependable. Those he worked with said he was leader. On Wednesday those close to Harvey Burkhart say those are the things they will remember about him the most.

Family members and several hundred friends and residents said their last goodbyes Wednesday afternoon.

Burkhart spent the last 16 years serving Carter County, including the last seven years as sheriff. Prior to that tenure, he had served as a reserve deputy for nine years.

A final procession took Sheriff Burkhart around the county one last time before his body was brought to Hillcrest Cemetery as several hundred people said farewell.

Sheriff Burkhart was respected so much we were told by county officials that inmates in the jail even sent their condolences as well.
