SHERMAN, Tex. -- An apartment fire off of Texoma Parkway in Sherman had crews busy much of Saturday night. Firefighters received the initial call from the Sherman Police Department around 7:00 p.m. regarding an active fire at the Hilltop Apartments.

When the officer arrived on the scene, officials say he was told there were several children still inside the unit. With the help of neighbors, the officer was able to save the children. The fire was under control shortly after. The fire began when the children started to play with a lighter.

No one was hurt during the fire. The family will be moved to another location for the night due to smoke damage.

I am truly thankful that there were no injuries involved in the fire! However what would cause one to place blame on the complex? I know pesonally they do their best to provide a safe clean environment for someone to call home! The rest is up to the residents! They are screened and checked every way possible! Some of the information in the other comments listed I know for a fact is false! Possible by former tennants evicted due to the fact they theirselves could not abide by rules! Once again man up and accept the fact we all make mistakes! Kids need constant supervision is the bottom line! Regardless of where they live! Yes, the apt's have been redone and do provide a place to live for people of all ages and income levels! I know for a fact there are residents there on assistance and there are also people who pay market rent which can exceed $700. a month! there will be good and bad in every complex! Trust me if live there and are doing wrong you time is limited!

to resident at hilltop.....why would you blame the apartment complex when it was clearly a 'child playing with a lighter' maybe you should try to teach the kids there fire safty instead of running away!

Okay, why was the lighter at hands reach for the kids to get? Another, the apts are income based and have been redone. People live their from 40.00 a month to 400.00. Your going to get all kinds of people in the complex. I myself had to live there years ago. Kids of all ages are left to find something to do because the mom is usually busy with other things. I saw this alot. Kids are courious, and will try whatever to have fun. At Hiltop there is no security or adult supervision of any kind. When I lived there, the security offc was a joke and a drug dealer that never got caught. There will be more fires and killings at Hiltop until someone starts to care. Remember the mother and son shot about a year ago? This is not place for kids or the honest person on a fixed income because of disability issues. Someone to create a more affordable place for the disable to live within the state guidelines, and move them out of Hiltop.

I am very concerned about the saftey here at these apts. This makes the 3rd fire in a year now. I am ready to move, I do not feel safe here anymore. What else more can be done to help prevent these fires.

Have a lot of fires there don't they??? Those people are lucky to live there so CHEAPLY! One would think they would take better care of the roof over their head.
