CARTER COUNTY, Okla. -- Carter County has a new sheriff after county commissioners voted to hand over the job to Under Sheriff Ken Grace for at least the next few months. Grace will serve out the remainder of the late Sheriff Harvey Burkhart's term.

Burkhart’s term was to expire in July. Burkhart died suddenly just over a week ago after complications during surgery.

Grace took the oath in front of a standing-room only crowd on Monday morning as Burkhart’s family looked on.

"This is the highest honor I believe I could ever have. I'm very, very proud and I'm going to do my best to be the sheriff that Harvey would want me to be," Grace said.

The election for the next Carter County Sheriff will be held on July 29th.
