FANNIN COUNTY, TX -- Leonard city officials have tabled discussion of a "faith-based" correctional institution for now.

There were nearly 400 signatures on a petition, about 300 from Leonard residents, opposing the 500-bed, 330-inmate facility. The proposal came from a non-profit called "Corrections Concepts Incorporated."

The Tuesday agenda called for city leaders to meet with CCI officials to discuss the issue. Mayor Bill Yoss says the council decided to table that issue until they can do more research on the issue.

Residents filled the meeting space in Leonard Tuesday night. Yoss says as of now, the item is scheduled to be on the February agenda.

So in a few years when we're re-surfacing with rock roads because we have no revenue to afford asphalt, we can all stick signs out in our yard saying "Thanks Ms. Harvey & clan." Fact of it is, we're more in danger to have an escaped convict come through town where we're at now with Bonham just north of us housing TWO maximum security prisons. When somebody escapes, they don't stay in the town where the prison is... they run away. This place would be a huge boost for Leonard and Fannin County. Unfortunately, we're plagued with people who are anti-growth and progress. Without this or something of similar stature that will boost revenue, you can kiss a quality town good-bye.
