TOM BEAN, Tex. -- The City of Tom Bean has a new mayor after Tom Wilthers resigned at Monday night’s city council meeting.

Wilthers said at his resignation that he works for the Ector Independent School District and could not devote himself to the job of mayor on a full-time basis.

Mayor pro tem Sherry Howard will be filling in for Wilthers until a May election.

Howard says she hopes to fill the position as well as Wilthers did and looks forward to leading the town.

"I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tom for the last five years, since I’ve been on the council and he's been a great mentor for me and a good leader. I'm looking forward to following in his footsteps," Howard says.

Howard did not say if she will run for the position in May, saying she still has a few months to decide.
