GAINESVILLE, Tex. -- An armed man was captured in Gainesville Monday night after running from police in one of their own cruisers.

Police in the Denton County town of Ponder say they were called to a burglary in progress on Monday when they found the suspect and took him in for questioning.

It turned out there was no burglary, so they let the man go.

As he was walking out of the station, authorities say he jumped in a police cruiser and took off, heading north on Interstate 35 in Cooke County.

Authorities say 26-year-old Rusty Edward Taylor drove with sirens and lights on in the police SUV, until the car drove over spikes in the road in Gainesville.

The Ponder police chief says Taylor apparently had a grand time in the car, using sirens, lights, and the police radio during the chase.

Deputies say he has a long criminal record, including theft, evading arrest, and drug charges.

Several agencies, including Gainesville Police and the Cooke County Constable assisted.
