OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma House Speaker Lance Cargill resigned Monday following published reports he paid property taxes late and failed to file state personal income tax returns for two years.

Cargill had been under fire following reports he was late for six straight years in paying property taxes on his Harrah law office.

The reports came after it was revealed Cargill failed to file state personal income tax returns in 2005 and 2006.

Cargill was serving his second year as House speaker and at 35 he was the nation's youngest state House speaker.

House rules state that if the speaker's position becomes vacant, the speaker pro tem will become acting speaker until an election is held.

Republican Representative Gus Blackwell is the House's speaker pro tem.

And the corruption in this state just continues on and on and on, I pay may taxes every year on time, but Cargill and others in the state government seem to all have the same excuse, sorry was just so busy or its my bookkeepers fault. Just on more example of the corruption, from the state auditor down to the chamber of commerce leaders. Its time to stop this endless cycle of corruption.

I file my taxes on time every year, I pay my property taxes every year on time. I expect my State Reps. to do the same. I know Republicans don't like taxes, but I didn't think that meant they just refused to pay them.
