SHERMAN, TX -- Fire season is here and no one is working harder to save homes and property than local firefighters. Right now one local department is short-staffed and needs to fill positions quickly.

Tuesday’s windy conditions just stretched the already understaffed Sherman Fire Department even thinner, but fire officials say filling four openings in the department should help spread the load.

Tuesday firefighters fought a blazing fire on Austin St. in a vacant home. They say right now firefighters are working double shifts to keep service going smoothly and the community safe.

"This is the right time. There's a lot of growth in the community, we're anticipating more growth and we're a really progressive department and we're looking forward to getting new guys on board," says Jeff Jones, Sherman fire chief.

The Local Civil Service Commission of the City of Sherman, Texas plans to host a competitive Civil Service examination for entry-level firefighters. It’s scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at 9:00 am at the Piner Middle School Cafeteria, 402 W. Pecan St. in Sherman.

a. Between the ages of 18 and 35 years of age.

3.Must have a valid and current Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
4.Must be able to read and write English
5.Must be free of disease or physical and/or mental defect that would in any manner interfere with the applicant performing the duties of a Firefighter;

7. Must have normal hearing ability free from hearing impairment;

    It's great to know that there are some Brothers in that dept that will tell it like it is. That is the truth about denison being crooked. Great suggestion on reading material for jason. By the way jason i didnt bash other fire departments like denison, I was bashing denison only. Read the report jason and then defend the a**holes in charge. One more thing jason i do know the truth, I also worked there at one time. So when i say stay safe Brothers, I earned that status with my brothers so shut up.

    Jason evidently you know nothing about Denison or else you are related or buddies with those so called good people in leadership roles. But I hate to tell you this I do work for Denison and we are not being led by good people but rather by yes men that just do what the crooked city council tells them to do and never stand up for their men!! And yes I will be one of the ones to test in Sherman due to the fact that I want to come home to my family after every shift and Sherman has a much much safer working environment then Denison does. Denison is so far behind the city next door it is not even funny, hopefully one day they will catch up but don't expect everyone to wait around till that day comes because without good leadership and people that stand behind the great men at Denison FD nothing is going to change anytime soon, Trust me I work there every third day!!! And as long as we are suggesting reading material may I suggest the state firemarshall's report about our BROTHER P. Townsend

    Im not taking a jab at other fireman jason. Im saying that the "company men" who run that department are the reason they cant keep firefighters. As for calling me a fool, that really sounds like a fellow brother. Im sure this blog was wrote by one of those that try to run that department. Let me clarify that there are 2 great leaders in that FD, but they cant change the way the men are treated by the other officers. And the book you recommended, that would make great study material for the next officers test! Stay safe "Brothers".

    Wow don't they take and train new people? Kinda hard to get all the training needed without being on a fire dept first???? Whats up with that?

    If your a brother, don't come here and bash other fire departments like denison. Dension has it's problems as with all departments, and they have good people in leadership roles. Don't through the word "brother" around when it follows a negative comment. That's no brother, for it is a fool. A brother never takes jabs at other fire departments, or fireman. If you have something like that you wanna say. Show your face, let yourself be heard. Maybe you should read this book. Pride, honor and ownership. By Rick Lasky Sounds like you need a lesson in what a brother and brotherhood is.

    I know that sherman will have plenty of applicants apply. There will probaly be more than half the denison fire department test there. They are ready to go to a department that is ran by professionals and not by a " company man ". Good luck Fellow Fire brothers.
