SHERMAN, TX -- The Sherman city council is going to great lengths to keep a new Grayson County jail in the city limits, making it very clear Monday night. Grayson county officials will decide on jail size, who builds it and staffs it, but city leaders say regardless they want it in Sherman.

The council passed a resolution allowing the Black Knight Partners to inspect the site as a potential jail location. The land they are talking about is a 76-acre tract at the southeast corner of Highway 11 and Ida Rd, FM 697, near the Animal Control Center.

Mayor Bill Magers says this site is close to the municipal airport which could be useful in transporting inmates. He says the justice center and the jail have kept the offices in the downtown area filled for years, and he wants to keep it that way.

"The citizens need to understand that our position is whatever the county decides to do with the jail, we want the jail to be in Sherman," Magers says.

There were no deeds or titles transferred, just permission for due diligence on the site.

Black Knight Partners have 360 days to finish their survey before presenting their findings to the city.
