BRYAN COUNTY, Okla. -- A car crash just outside of Durant has claimed the life of a Durant elementary school teacher.

Students and faculty in Durant are mourning the loss of one of their own. 31-year-old Rona Cavender was killed Monday night in a car accident just outside the city limits.

Cavender taught first grade at Robert E. Lee Elementary School.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers say Cavender was driving west on Highway 70 around 3:30 Monday afternoon, when her Chevy SUV was struck by a Mercury SUV driven by Gary Coxsey, Sr., of Mead.

They say Coxsey had been driving erratically when he swerved into Cavender's lane, hitting her head on.

Coxsey was also killed on impact, and troopers say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Durant ISD held a special board meeting Monday night.

Counselors are on hand for faculty, staff, and students.
