Whitesboro man accused of posing as police officer

SHERMAN, Tex. - A suspected police impersonator is in custody after stopping a Sherman man Friday night, police said. Authorities say it may not be the first time an incident liek this has happened.

Police say John Stacey, a mechanic for the city of McKinney and a Whitesboro resident tried to stop Charles Dozeman as he was traveling on Highway 75.

Dozeman says he saw the red and blue flashing lights in his rearview mirror and pulled over in the Sherman Wal-Mart parking lot.

But the supposed officer never got out of his car. Dozeman says he walked over to the fake police car and saw that the man driving had on a mechanic's shirt with a badge pinned to it.

The suspect told Dozeman he was going to have him arrested. That was when Dozeman says he called 911 and the suspect drove off through the parking lot.

Police say John Stacey also had a gun in the glove box of his car.

He was jailed Friday night on weapons charges.

No bond has been set.

Update: Mr Stacey was released after spending a night in jail. The Sherman PD found nothing to charge him with, because all of Mr. Doseman's statements were untruthful, and could not be confirmed or used to convict Mr. Stacey. Because no crime was committed prior to police finding his handgun, in his glove box, the weapons charge was dropped. Mr. Dozeman posted on here stating, "his car has a rap sheet a year long of him pulling people over on 75." Again, Mr. Dozeman telling a lie. Sherman PD ran the plates of the vehicle and found nothing. His car had amber lights only. Because he has a part-time Mobile Auto Medic business, he uses these lights for roadside jobs. Detectives on the case were very apologetic to Mr. Stacey for all his troubles. It seems that faulty police investigation, and lies by Mr. Dozeman caused this. Please remember that there are other people out there like Mr. Charles Dozeman. Be carefull of them.

It is legal to carry a gun in your car without a permit. The catch is it can not be loaded. Loaded gun you need permit.

Are there any laws protecting a civilian who feels more comfortable driving to a safer place, to pull over? This happened to me, recently, I drove one-mile before pulling over, to a destination where I felt safe. I was charged with a felony, evading arrest with a motor vehicle. I am a functioning member of society, college educated, former military and am now facing serious financial and legal burden.

I was at the walmart in sherman when this so called impersonator was stopped and then watched as the sherman keystone cops ran around in circles looking in a law book for two hours trying to find something to charge this man with. I also watched while they turned on all the lights on the car and there were no red and blue flashing lights anywhere on the car. the headlights flashed and there where amber flashing lights on the rear of the car. none of these items are illegal in the state of Texas. also you are not required to have a permit to carry a gun in a motor vehicle as long as it is concealed. you do need a permit if you are going to carry a gun on your persons. the reason for the weapons charge is probable because of the other charges. this is just a scare tactic used by police dept. to get a conviction on at least some charge. it is really to make the police dept. look good in the media.

It's a brand new law that was just passed. You have to have a permit to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon on your person. But you are allowed to have a weapon in your vehicle as long as it is not sitting out in the open. Check it with the NRA. But no one can blame any of you since, just from what I have read on these comments, y'all believe everything you read, or hear, first and dont care to do the research, instead you wait for others to do it for you. From what I am hearing the newscast just reported one side and can't seem to see the other side of this story. Doesn't our rights read innocent until proven guilty? Not guilty until proven innocent. I just hope that John Stacey isn't tried by a bunch of yokels who can't form an informed opinion with out being told what it will be.

Krystal, do not think that the poilce officers didn't see the lights on his car when they pulled up to arrest him? You cannot have a fire arm in your car unless you have a permit, why do you think the officers arrested him on a weapon charge, you need to think before you post on here

Yes that's what I am saying, because I know that car the yellow traffic advisory lights in the back. That there isn't ANY red or blue lights on that car. Put yourself in John's shoes... You are running out of gas and need to get to the gas station. You pull in the station to pump gas and some loone gets out of his car and starts coming up you. What would say or do? Is that not a little aggressive. Would you feel threatened? I know that I would have said that I would have him arrested for road rage. And one more thing to Anonymous, Sherman. I do know the law fact is I have law enforcement running through my family, Uncles, cousins, and my Grandfather who was a policeman for 26 years. And for everyone else. You are letting this badly reported and investigated newscast form your opinion. There is much more to this story than the station is willing to investigate or report on. HOW MUCH CLOSER CAN THE DOTS BE FOR SOME OF YOU PEOPLE!

Krystal, you still need a permit to carry a gun. I guess your boy didn't have one or they wouldn't have weapons charges on him.

Krystal: Are you saying Mr.Dozeman lied about the color of the lights he saw, or that he made the story up completely?Did John just happen to be behind him and the yellow lights were turned on by accident or what. Please fill in the blanks for us.If there is two sides give us John's.thanks P.S. good thinking Bob from Texas
