Thunderstorm season is upon us, and the storms it brings can be powerful. Ryan Loyd has more on staying safe during one of Mother Nature’s most impressive displays in this Safe Family report.

Although they can be a spectacular show, thunderstorms can be dangerous because of high winds, hail, flooding, or even tornadoes that can be associated with the storm.

"Lightning is dangerous, and kills people all across the United States," KXII-TV meteorologist Tom Miller says.

The National Weather Service classifies a "severe" thunderstorm as one that reaches or exceeds 57.5 miles per hour or produces hail the size of a dime or larger.

"Be the smallest object around, lightning likes to cheat. Ideally, you'd need to be inside or in a car,” Miller says.

Staying safe means being aware. Here are some safety tips on thunderstorms:

-be sure to know what's going on
-tune in to the forecast by TV or radio
-have plenty of batteries on hand in case the power goes out and you need to listen to important reports by radio
-always stay off the phone and electrical equipment, stay away from windows, avoid taking a shower or bath.
-if you're driving, slow down or pull off the road all together and avoid touching any metal in your car
-if you're outdoors, don't go near tall objects like trees
-if you're in a group, spread out and try to find a building, but if you can't stay low

If you begin to feel the hair on your arm standing, lighting is about to strike, and instead of lying flat on the ground -- because that will make you a big target -- crouch down and put your hands on your knees.
