BRYAN COUNTY, Okla. -- The Durant fire marshal says Wednesday night's house fires are a result of arson.

It happened on Northeast 4th Avenue and Locust around 10 p.m. Authorities say a vacant home on the corner was the first to catch fire. It had already been gutted by fire months ago.

Then another fire started just two houses down. Neighbors say that home was vacant as well. The Chapman family lives in between the two burned structures and say they were lucky their home was spared.

"Well this one was a blazin’. This one I guess was just smoke. It’s all I could see, but this one, it was a blaze," neighbor Bobby Chapman said.

Fire marshal Lisa Jackson says both fires were started in bedrooms and says it appears that the person ignited basic household items.

While there was extensive damage, Jackson credits firefighters for stopping the flames when they did.

"Kudos to them. They were efficient and effective, and they actually saved a lot of stuff for me to look at and didn't destroy any more than the fire had."

No word on any suspects.
