SHERMAN, Tex. -- One local teen is showing his love for others by cutting his hair. Peter Lorensen, a ninth grader at Sherman High, cut off about a foot of his hair at the Elks Lodge Thursday night.

Denison barber Danny Edmonds of Salon 120 performed the honors.

Peter says about three years ago he decided to grow his hair after his grandfather died of cancer. He planned to donate the hair to "Locks of Love," an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.

He says he likes a long, shaggy mane, and this was the perfect way to give back in the process.

"They go through chemo and radiation and all this other stuff and they can’t grow hair, so I think it may boost their self confidence," Peter says.

Edmonds chopped about twelve inches until Peter’s hair reached his chin. He says he plans to grow it back out and do it all over again.

What a sweet story. My mom donated her hair to locks of love recently (she's always had short hair, but a couple years ago decided to grow it long just for this purpose). I'd love to do it, but my hair grows maybe 3" a year, tops...

I think this is a wonderful story. It's too sad that most of today's children are too wrapped up in themselves and their wants, and not thinking about other's and their needs. This is a very sweet young man and his parents should be very proud!!!!!!!!!

That is sweet. My little girl wants to cut her hair for locks of love and she is 9. She just came up to me one day when she was 4 or 5 and said she wanted to do this. She has been growing her hair since birth. She is almost ready she says.

I think that is awesome. I also donated my hair to locks of love. Makes you feel good about doing something for people who have no control over what happens to them and will help boost their self confidence after goin thru radiation and chemo. Way to go!
