ARDMORE, Okla. - An Ardmore fifth grader may not be allowed to return to class for the rest of the year after being caught with a BB gun at school.

Assistant Superintendent Geneva Matlack says another student told school officials the 5th grader had the gun with an air cartridge in his backpack.

Matlack says no one was hurt and police were called to the school.

The school has recommended the student not be allowed back in class for the remainder of the year.

Last week, school officials in Gainesville say a student there brought a BB gun onto a school bus. No one was hurt in that incident, but the school police are investigating.

Not allowed in school for 5th and 6th grade. Not allowed to go to Take Two. Not allowed to appeal the decision of the school. All he did was tell a friend and the friend told a teacher and they found it in his backpack in his locker. No danger was intended. A stupid mistake. I understand the rest of 5th but 6th also. This could put him two years behind. Any suggestion to help with his schooling would be appreciated.

The reason he is in trouble is because all schools are DRUG FREE/WEAPON FREE zones. Regardless of whether it's a BB gun, rifle, or even an uzi for that matter. There is a zero tolerance for ANY weapon of ANY kind. Yes, he is still a kid, and yes, he made a mistake. He will continue to get his education at DAEP. These days, you can't be too careful. What if they didn't punish him?

You think kids actually learn in school? Ha ha! Kids who would bring a BB gun to school probably have no interest whatsoever in learning, and are probably going to school only because they're being forced to by their parents.

Anonymous, there is no excuse for it but to not allow him to come back to school for the rest of the school year is a little ridicoulous, put him in ISS or somewhere where he is not around kids so he can contiune to learn and pass his classes

Kind of funny how all of you saying to bust his butt are likely the same parents that have yelled about someone giving your kid licks at school. Most schools have no option but to suspend a student due to they cant bust a kids bottom because it might damage them emotionally. This is what happens when you take other forms of discipline out of schools.

This is the equivalent of giving someone 5 years in jail for jaywalking. A couple of days of suspension and a butt whipping would have sufficed. This is a law/rule that needs to be changed. Was this kid a bully? Was he a trouble maker? Was he threatening anyone? Or was it just bad judgment of a “child” who wanted to show off a new toy to his friends? You have to ask yourself, does the punishment fit the crime. While this is a dangerous weapon, it is not a deadly one.

I guess Karen has never been shot in the arse by a school bully who took a BB gun to school, while everybody stood around watching and laughing, and the principal & teachers did nothing about it at all. I see no reason why anyone thinks this kid should get off easy for taking a BB gun to school. No excuse for it.

Why in the world would anyone buy a BB gun for a kid? They are just asking for trouble. Nobody who lives in town & goes to a town school needs a BB gun.
