ADA, OK - A Pontotoc county mother and stepfather are in jail after police say they abused their five-year-old son. The investigation started last Friday when authorities say the man was seen hitting the little boy in the mouth. Mystic Matthews has more on this story.
The Sheriff's Office says officials at the boy's Pre-K school in Ada called his parents to pick him up because he was sick. But the school says as they drove away, they saw the step-dad reach back and bust the boy's lip.
Reports say the mother was sitting right next to the child in the back seat when it happened.
The Pontotoc County Sheriff's Office and the Ada Police started looking into the alleged abuse Friday and Saturday arrested the 27-year-old step dad, JaQuincy Mcain Smith, for one count of felony child abuse.
Investigators say during the investigation into that incident, Smith gave them a different story than the mom. So after talking to a witness and the 5-year-old, deputies arrested 23-year-old Kaycee Sue Smith on charges of enabling child abuse.
The boy's injuries include a busted and bruised upper lip and large bruises on his legs.
If either are convicted for child abuse or enabling child abuse, it could mean anywhere from one year to life in prison.
JaQuincy and Kaycee Smith appeared in court today. Bail was set at $25,000 each. Both are scheduled to appear back in court next week.
