COLBERT, Okla. - Colbert residents met Tuesday night with city council members to discuss the city's $100,000 deficit.
The city attorney says due to recent mis-management of city funds, books were not kept and bills were not paid.
Now the city owes about $100,000 to the IRS and other agencies. The IRS says they need a payment plan set up by this Friday. So at Tuesday night’s meeting, city leaders voted to use money from the police department's general fund to make an initial $36,000 payment.
City Attorney Theresa McGehee says, "Now what Colbert has to do is tighten the belt. Get through the mess. We have a great city council and good turnout tonight. People understand and agree that we can't ignore it, so let's deal with it."
The city attorney says it's important to know the $100,000 was not stolen, it was just not used properly.
