Durant Kiwanis choose Schuler Park as One-Day Project
DURANT, Okla. -- The Kiwanis are known for their service to the community and especially children, so it's not surprising that members in Durant have chosen Schuler Park as their "One-Day" project.
The graffiti-marked facility is badly in need of a makeover, and the Kiwanis say the park has a special place in their hearts.
"Schuler Park is in the middle of a neighborhood that we use. The Kiwanis’s have an annual picnic out here each year, so we're here, and we enjoy the park and we want the neighborhood to be able to enjoy the park," Linda Prather, with Durant Kiwanis, says.
Kiwanis are also making recycling bins available on the clean-up day, collecting newspapers, tires, and corrugated card board.
Campsite preparations at Lake Texoma
Spring will be here in just a few days. That often means nicer weather and camping trips at Lake Texoma, but last summer's floods took a toll on the campgrounds, so this Saturday, volunteers are pitching in to get things up and running.
It’s being led by the Durant Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, and the Army Corps of Engineers. Durant chamber director Janet Reed says it's important for Texoma to be ready for the busy season.
"We must get the campsites that we can get ready in order to accommodate the number of tourists that pass through our area," Reed says.
Reed says she hopes to have over 150 volunteers for the clean-up.
