GRAYSON CO., TX -- A teenager is in serious condition following a pit bull attack. Her boyfriend told first responders he had to shoot the dog about five times before it released its grip on the girl.

First responders say it happened at a home in the 8100 block of FM 697 near Whitewright. They say a pit bull lunged and attacked a 16-year-old girl at her boyfriend's house.

Her boyfriend had to shoot the gun multiple times before the dog released its grip and died. The girl was flown to a Dallas hospital with injuries on her face and arm.

"This was an adult dog that was given to them by a friend,” says James Dixon, assistant Tom Bean fire chief. “They didn't have any history on the dog or its previous circumstance so they didn't know much about it at the time."

Animal control took the dog Tuesday. The Sheriff's Office says they are not investigating the case.

I'm sick of these pit bull owners saying, MY dog is sweet and gentle, prosecute the owners, not the breed. I am so wary of these dogs I will cross the street, or go the other way to avoid them. There is no reason for anyone to own these animals. They are too unpredictable, too powerful. Let's hear you defending your sweet pit bull after your face has been torn off.

Wow! The ignorance is overwhelming! Any living creature that is deprived of a loving and nurturing environment knows nothing but carnal instinct. If a child is raised in violence, more often than not, he will perpetuate that violence in his adult life. Animals are no different. To the person in Sherman, I am terribly sorry for your experience! I think the dog should have been put down and the owner held responsible, however I am not "full of it"! I am the proud owner of ten American Pit Bull Terriers. They are loved, disciplined, and rewarded just like children, only the dogs are more well behaved! We responsible owners are sick and tired of having to defend our loyal, loving pets because of the few bad owners! Furthermore, if you want to punish a biting dog then it had better be unilateral! Every freaking little ankle biting chihuahua that would gnaw off a limb if it could should punished the same way.

Those of you who promote killing pit bulls well maybe in my opinion those of you who promote it should be killed. It is all in how you raise them. I have a 5 year old pit that never once in his life has bit anyone or even attempted too.I would probably bite your butt to if you were provoking me. Way I look at it is if you get attacked by a pit bull then you had to do something to deserve it and if you don't like that then you know where you can go.

Tufts university performed a study on Pit Bull owners and the techniques they use to deal with their chosen breed's outrageous safety record. Becoming a breed defender is one of the ways. It can be read here: http://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-pitbull-owners.htm

" Gary for the ethical treatment of humans. GETA".....Ahhh, now we get down to the bottom of Gary's ignorance. He's a PETA freak in disguise! We'll excuse you Gary.
