TOM BEAN, Tex. -- The city of Tom Bean was awarded a $125,000 grant on Monday.

The money comes from a grant issued by the Office of Rural Community Affairs. Mayor Sherry Howard says it will be used for water system improvements to help the city meet Department of Environmental Quality standards.

Howard says city council has been working on getting this grant for years.

"It’s exciting, as being on the council for the past five years. I know that this has been going on for a long time now," Mayor Sherry Howard says.

Howard says work on the water system should start in about six months.
