DURANT, OK - Durant's new police chief is now official.

Durward Cook was appointed by City Manager Jim Dunegan and officially sworn in Tuesday night. Dunegan says he chose Cook because of his exceptional training and leadership skills.

Chief Cook says he's grateful for the support of his fellow officers, the city and his family. "I just can't express how good it makes you fell to have that support. And if I can transfer that support from me onto my department, we just can't lose."

Cook was previously a Captain on the Durant force and has been in the chief's position since the beginning of the May.

He replaces Chief Gary Rudick, who took a job in Tulsa.

In response to redneck, you cant take the actions of one officer, and pin that on the entire department. There are a bunch of good guys that work at DPD.

Whatever. I'll give him 90 days. Try and keep him from breaking and entering!

I have worked for DPD in the past and I believe this action should have taken place years ago. I know that the City of Durant will be lead in the right direction and the officers will be more upbeat about their jobs now. Cook knows what the department needs and the direction it should go!!!! Congtats Cook!!!

I think Mr. Dunegan MADE a great decision, as Officer Cook has always been unbiased in any dealings that I have known of and will make a Honest and dependable Chief if he stands for the values as his past record demostrates. He has also been there IF I needed him as he does reside somewhat close to my studio and home. Good Luck Chief Cook
