SHERMAN, Tex. -- A driver not paying attention is what police say caused an accident on FM 1417 Thursday morning that sent one man to the hospital.

The accident happened shortly before 7 o'clock Thursday morning. Police say the driver of a pick-up truck pulled onto FM 1417 from the ramp that connects to Highway 56 and got into the left lane of traffic. Police say construction going on in that area confused him. He thought both of those lanes were north bound.

The driver collided with a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, Derrick Jones, 39, of Sherman, had to be flown to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Jones was wearing a helmet. He is listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

I have had ridden street bikes, off and on, for the last 30 years. Rule #1, NEVER assume a 4 wheeler sees you or even acknowledges you. Rule #2, ALWAYS use the protection available to you, Snell approved helmet fitted properly, riding jacket and pants with armour, gloves and boots. I cringe when I see other riders with no helmet, tee shirts, short pants and flip flops on their feet. But, that is their choice and not mandated by the government, nor do I think it should be. My heart goes out to Derrick and wish him a full recovery. Keep riding. You have learned a valuable lesson. Road rash is the pits!

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. "Look Twice, Save a Life", "Cycle Vision. How many motorcycles have you seen today?" The life you save today may be mine, my husbands', my sons', your doctors', lawyers', teachers', etc. Please pay attention and give motorcyclists the respect they deserve on the road to ride safely and live!

When will people start watching out for motorcycles? Did this person not see a headlight coming right at him or her? Prayers go out to Derrick.
