SHERMAN, Tex. -- The Grayson County Sheriff's Office is a target of a new scam. Sheriff Keith Gary says they received a check made out to him at the sheriff's office.

Gary says that is not uncommon. Many times people put his name on checks to pay fines or court costs. But after doing some research, they realized the check is from a closed bank account and is probably fake.

"What they want to know as soon as you cash the check, they want to know some information, all your bank accounts, and we have no doubt that if they receive that they're going to clean out your account, and we're sure that's the purpose behind all this," Gary says.

Sheriff Gary says they have tried corresponding with those involved and receive what appears to be an automated e-mail, asking them to wire money to someone in the republic of Benin in Africa.
