We're seeing a little relief at the pump these days, but with gas prices in Texoma still averaging over $3.50 a gallon, many people are looking to trade in gas guzzlers for more fuel efficient cars.

Trucks and large SUV sales decreased during the first half of the year, and car dealers are now recommending smaller cars to anyone looking to buy a new vehicle.

In fact, at Holiday Chevrolet, dealers say small cars like the Cobalt have reached all-time sales records.
Hybrids are still in demand, but dealers say they might not be the smartest choice for everyone.

"They're estimating that it will be $5,000-$10,000 to replace those batteries, and those batteries aren't really friendly for the environment. So sometimes a Hybrid could be a contradictory term," said Matt Johnson, owner of Holiday Chevrolet.

Dealers suggest you research and compare the price of the Hybrid to the amount you would save in gas, and how it would fit with your driving habits.

There are hybrid SUV's. I think Saturn makes one and Ford.

More battery myths.. Aren't you journalists supposed to check your facts first? FYI, hybrid batteries carry an 8-year / 100,000- mile warranty. It fails before then, carmaker replaces it for you FREE. No reports of battery failures even after 200,000 miles in the fleets of hybrid taxis in Vancouver and New York City. Toyota pays you a $200 bounty to bring back a battery for recycling if you are going to junk your Prius at the end of its life. How about establishing a fact-checking department at your TV station?

I don't recall ANY battery friendly to the environment, not even AAA or AA batteries. The main focus was probably the fumes expelled from the car and the gas mile capability. If the car does both of those, then it's a winner to me.

I feel better at the pump these days. The price has dropped more than I thought it would. It's gone down by more than 50 cents in many places here in Sherman. Now that's not a ton but it's pretty good considering all we had been told was to watch for it to just continue to go up. In my opinion it's better to just cut back on driving when you can to save a little money than to go out and pay thousands for a silly car that isn't going to save you much considering the cost of the new vehicle.

I wish they had a hybrid minivan or something... I have a family of 6 and we sure won't fit into one of those hybrid cars!
