GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- The Sherman-Denison Metropolitan Planning Organization held a public meeting Wednesday night to talk about what's known as the "691 Corridor."
Future developments around Highway 75 and FM 691 like the new Texoma Medial Center will likely mean extra traffic and congestion.
That's why the Sherman- Denison MPO and TxDOT are coming up with proposals to cater to those developments.
“We’re going to need to do improvements to 691, widen out, add extra lanes and probably some signalization at the intersection. That all needs to be put into work pretty quickly so we can be ahead of the curve when traffic gets there," said Kevin Harris, area engineer for TxDOT.
Wednesday's public hearing drew several dozen residents who gave input on the plans including one landowner who will lose part of her farm to the planned expansion.
"I'm for helping the community and for the roads to be better," said Ernestine White, a resident in Sherman.
White does not seem to mind the changes, which planners hope will happen sooner rather than later.
"We are trying to be proactive in that intersection rather than when the congestion gets there," the chairman of the MPO Committee said.
Harris estimates the total cost for construction is around $3 million.
It is too early to tell what drivers could expect. If the project is approved, Grayson County Commissioner Gene Short, who is also the chairman of the local MPO, says construction is expected to begin next year and could last at least six months.
