County fairs and plenty of other big community events are going on in Grayson County and Fannin County right now. But what do you do when you turn around and your kids are gone? Josh Stevenson has more in our Safe Family report.

A county fair can be fun for the whole family, but with all the people and distractions at a fair, it only takes a second to lose track of your children

Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department says that is why it is important to have a plan.

"First and foremost, talk to your kids about stranger awareness before you get there."

Besides talking to your kids about strangers, it is also important that they know some basic information

"Depending on there age they need to know mom and dad’s name in case they do get separated. A lot of kids if you ask them what mom’s name is, they will say ‘Mom,’ if you ask them what dad’s name is they will say ‘Dad.’"

Talk to your kids about who a policeman is, so if they do get separated they can find help.

"If they do get lost they need to find a fair official or a police officer, and say, ‘Hey I am lost, this is my name, this is my parent’s name."

Pay special attention to what your child is wearing when you go to the fair, and if you have older kids that can go off by themselves, make sure you have a family meeting place.

"If the kids are old enough to understand that if someone gets lost to meet up at a particular location and plan that in advance."
