CALERA, OK-Thousands of dollars worth of equipment had been stolen from Calera's volunteer fire department.

Firefighters were surprised to see one of these doors pried open Monday morning and as they went inside, they found $4,000 worth of equipment missing.

"It kind of disgusted us because the station's there for protection. It's there to protect the people then someone comes in to take some of our equipment that we use to save someone's life and to protect us."

Calera Fire Chief, Brian Norton, said firefighters were on their way to a call Monday morning when they noticed several breathing masks and radio equipment had been stolen from their sub-station on the 300 block of Smiser road.

Norton said as a volunteer fire department, grants and funding are hard to come by to help replace the stolen items.

"We've got this equipment on a grant about five years ago and we don't have the money to replace it so we have to save up," he said.

"These firefighters don't get any compensation for it and everything's done on their time and it takes away from their family time and the things they have to do. With the sacrifice they make for the townspeople, I just think it's pretty sorry that someone would get in there and take the tools they to keep them safe."

Calera Assistant Police Chief, T.J. White said they believe the break-in happened in the late hours last weekend.

"I have no idea what they would even think to do with those things. I don't see where the value with equipment like that to anybody than firefighters," said White.

White said the break-in is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
He said the thieves will be facing theft, grand larceny and burglary charges.

Norton said because of the break-in, they are looking into improving security around the fire station.
