Oklahoma schools awaiting decision on funding

School superintendents in our area say they need to know whether they'll get that supplemental funding by April 1st so they can tell their teachers whether they have a job next year or not.

But representatives have been debating the budget for hours today and are yet to reach a resolution. The measure includes $90.5 million dollars in tax cuts for the next two years, a three day sales tax holiday, and $92 million in supplemental appropriations that includes 60 million to cover the fixed costs such as retirement benefits and social security that weren't covered when the legislature gave teachers a $3,000 pay raise last year.

However, last week, the state education department sent districts a letter saying the lottery did not meet lawmakers’ expectations, leaving the state $37 million short in funding teacher salaries.

State education department officials say although the proposal doesn't address this revenue shortfall, it should keep schools from having to make budget cuts.

If the bill gets through the house, it will make its way to the Governor's desk for approval.

The budget also includes $5.5 million to cover Oklahoma's promise shortfalls. That's a program that offers college scholarships to those who struggle to afford tuition.
